My name is Tim Grennan. As an oncologist at Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento, for the last twenty-one years, I am privileged to care for patients who have cancer or certain blood diseases.

Originally I am from Grand Island, Nebraska, where I grew up in a family of five boys. After high school, I attended Loyola University in Chicago. For medical school, I returned to my home state and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Following internship, I underwent training at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine and served as a flight surgeon in the U. S. Air Force on active duty in the mid-1970’s. I was stationed at Mt. Home Air Force Base, home of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing (which was featured in one of Tom Clancy’s books, “Fighter Wing”) and was attached to the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron in the F-111 aircraft. In the late 1970’s, I left the Air Force and completed my internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It was also in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan where I completed my subspecialty training in medical oncology.

My Credentials

Medical school University of Nebraska Lincoln, Lincoln, NE
Residency University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, MI
Fellowship University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, MI
Board certification Medical Oncology, American Board of Internal Medicine
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

Since joining Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento, in 1983, I have been involved in a number of activities in addition to patient care. In 1986, I became the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director for the Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento Campus for the University of California Davis (UCD) School of Medicine. Our hospital has had a unique relationship with the University of California Davis School of Medicine for over 25 years. It is the first managed care hospital to be a fully integrated teaching hospital of a university residency program within the United States. Each year we teach dozens of young doctors and medical students from the University of California Davis. My current academic rank is Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at UCD. I also serve as an Associate in the Department of Bioethics at UCD as well as the chairperson for the Volunteer Clinical Faculty Committee at the University of California, Davis.

I have been fortunate to receive a number of teaching awards: "Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award" (awarded by the housestaff), Department of Internal Medicine, University of California, Davis; 1988-89 and the "Distinguished Faculty Award" (awarded by the housestaff), Department of Internal Medicine, University of California Davis; 1995-96. In 2003, I was awarded the first annual “Award of Excellence for Graduate Medical Education” by The Permanente Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente, Northern California Region. This award is in recognition of the important commitment that The Permanente Medical Group has made over the last half century in the training and education of young doctors.

As a cancer specialist, I feel that clinical trials are very important for my patients. With this in mind, I have been involved in our region’s oncology clinical trials program since it’s inception. As the Principal Investigator for Kaiser Permanente’s UCD affiliate of the Southwest Oncology Group (a National Cancer Institute cooperative trials program), I help direct the implementation of new cancer treatments within our northern California region.

Shortly after the Gulf War in the early 1990’s, I joined the U. S. Air Force Reserves and currently serve as Chief of Aerospace Medicine with the 349th Aerospace Medicine Squadron at Travis AFB, CA. As a flight surgeon in the reserves, I have been a crewmember on both the C-5 Galaxy and the KC-10 Extender. Over the years, I have been fortunate to also serve as an educational consultant for the Professional Development Center, U. S. Air Force Reserve Command. In this capacity I have been involved with junior officer leadership development and have helped conduct leadership seminars at the NATO School, the German Air Force Academy, the Royal Dutch Military Academy, the Swedish Military Academy and a number of other sites as well.

I am committed to excellence in patient care, graduate medical education, and clinical research.
